The environmental movement has undergone dramatic changes in the last few years, with diversity, equity, and inclusion as the catalyst for transformation. Staff at environmental organizations are more diverse than they used to be, and progress is being made in equity and inclusion. However, we still have a long way to go and in some areas progress has been minimal or even backsliding. The DEI backlash has also created a hostile environment for many DEI efforts.
We need this work more than ever. We know that many groups suffer exclusion in the environmental movement and in society, and many who are in it are suffering moral injury and burnout. When talented people leave or are not able to do their best, the entire movement loses out. As we move beyond the upheavals caused by the pandemic, election, wars, and natural disasters, we need a moment to reflect on our journey, celebrate our progress, and prepare for what's ahead.
